“They’re much better” – Carlo Ancelotti talks up European referees on back of Valencia controversy

Real Madrid are still reeling from Saturday’s controversial 2-2 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla, where Jude Bellingham’s late header was not allowed to stand after referee Jesus Gil Manzano had already blown the full time whistle.

This sparked fury among those associated with the club, especially as Bellingham was sent off by Gil Manzano for his reaction to the goal not being award – and Real Madrid have since failed to overturn the two-match suspension, for now.

Carlo Ancelotti kept his cool when discussing the incident last weekend, although he couldn’t resist aiming a dig in the direction of Spanish referees when he spoke to Sky Sport in Italy ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig on Wednesday – quotes covered by Diario AS.

“In the Champions League, the best referees from all the countries whistle. The number of errors here is reduced because the quality is higher than in domestic leagues.”

The incident involving Gil Manzano is likely to continue being a talking point over the coming weeks. Real Madrid feel very aggrieved by the matter, and you can understand why.
