Barcelona cleared of ‘ineligible player’ charges after Elche complaint is dismissed

Barcelona have been cleared of fielding an ineligible player, after a complaint by Elche was filed following their recent La Liga clash.

The Blaugrana beat Elche 4-0 at the beginning of April in a performance that featured Gavi. It came after Gavi’s first-team licence had been removed, following a court case where Barcelona had tried to transfer him to a senior contract.

Elche had complained that once a player’s licence is cancelled, they are no longer eligible to play again in the same season. However the Competition Committee have ruled that Gavi reverted to his previous youth team licence once the legal measures were rejected, rather than having his licence cancelled, as per MD.

Had Barcelona been found guilty, they would have faced an automatic defeat in that match, which would have opened the title race up, but they maintain their 11-point lead over Real Madrid.

As it stands, Barcelona are still unable to register the teenage sensation. Should they fail to do so, they may face losing him at the end of the season.
