Ever since Joan Laporta’s press conference on Monday regarding El Caso Negreira, Barcelona and Real Madrid have been engaged in a bitter debate.

The situation was engulfed in flames after Laporta referred to Real Madrid as “the club of the regime”. The comments did not go down well among Los Blancos officials, and they responded by releasing a video surrounding Barcelona’s connection with the Franco regime in the early 20th century.

Historical quotes from Sir Alex Ferguson have now added fuel to the fire. As per MD, the former Manchester United manager referred to Real Madrid as “General Franco’s club” back in 2008.

“The really obscene thing about all this is that Real Madrid, as General Franco’s club, has a history, before democracy came to Spain, of getting who it wants and doing what it wants.”

The debate has been ugly, and has brought back a lot of harrowing history during a very dark time for Spain. Laporta has successful distracted from El Caso Negreira, but at what cost?
