Messi’s exploits have helped him win 11 league titles and four Champions Leagues. By contrast, Maradona won three league titles and one UEFA Cup.

The argument that Messi must win the World Cup also falls down when considering the quality of modern international football in the past.

Thank you for the insightful article. I agree if Messi had played at the times of Pele’ and Maradona, he would won a World Cup for sure. winning UFEA championship is as demanding or even more because it’s against teams who play together all season which is not the case for International teams
Maradona won a WC with an arguably weaker Argentina. Ge also carried weaker non-national teams to glory during his career whereas messi has only starred in top teams. Maradona ability to make a difference with less team material sets him apart from anyone else.
The conclusion is obvious. Untill he wins WC he will never be goat.
Also being irrelevant in CL for 8 seasons now doesnt help his cause.

He played with players that have legit claims to be the best to have played for their countries and clubs.

Did you watch Pele or Maradona as much as have you have watched Messi?
Do you really think Messi would have won 2 scudettos in Italy for Napoli against the great Italian teams of the 80s and early 90s?
How many teams in the World Cups that Messi played in do you think measures up to the Brazil teams of 82 and 86, the French sides of 82, 84 and 86; Italy of 82 and 90; Germany of 82, 86 and 90; Holland of 88?
Keep acting like Messi faced better opposition and defenders than Pele and Maradona if it makes you sleep better at night
I have to throw Johan Cruyff’s hat into the ring alongside Messi, as a potential GOAT who did not lift a WC trophy. That 1974 Holland team was special. The anarchy in Argentina in 1978, deprived Cruyff another legitimate chance to win a WC.
