Mauricio Pochettino claims VAR helped Real Madrid to Champions League victory

Former Espanyol and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino had one of the highest stocks in Europe before taken on the Paris Saint-Germain job. Yet like Thomas Tuchel and Unai Emery, who had similar reputations, there was definite feeling of impotency associated with Pochettino by the time he finished in Paris.

The evidence rules in Pochettino’s favour looking at Tuchel and Emery now, PSG are a tremendously difficult entity to lead.

Speaking in a recent interview with Infobae, that was then carried by Marca, Pochettino explained how the deep-rooted desire to win the Champions League affects matters at the Parc des Princes.

“Everything is focused on the Champions League and sometimes that distracts a little and that demand seems like it only exists in the lead up to the Champions League. In the other competitions the superiority of PSG is taken as a given. The obsession is the Champions League and anything that isn’t winning the Champions League is a synonym of failure.”

Yet he believes he was unfortunate. Pochettino was eliminated by Manchester City in the semi-final in his first campaign, before a famous Real Madrid comeback put PSG out in the most recent edition. Pochettino was keen to recall the injustice of the tie in his eyes, a foul not given on Gianluigi Donnarumma after Karim Benzema robbed him for the first Real Madrid goal.

“I think that it was a foul and if they would have revised it on VAR, we would be talking about something else, of the elimination of Madrid.”

It certainly went down badly with the Parisians, PSG CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi subsequently went looking for the referee after the match. However regardless of what the correct judgement is of that foul, throughout the history of the competition, few if any winners will have gone through the entire tournament without a fortunate decision or two. Equally, as winners, there is no need for analysis of any decisions harshly given against them.

  1. It was a 50 50 call and it didnt go his way.

Goalkeeper had plenty of time to kick the ball into a throw-in, corner or orbit.
But he chose to dribble and fell like a house of cards under slightest of pressure.

What Pochettino is instructed to keep quiet about from deranged PSG hierarchy is the fact that it was the 1-2 goal with 20 mins to go. Any team worth its salt would have seen the game out or heII, even scored another one in that period of time.

But no, instead they let two more goals in, in a 2 minute period of time.

They should accept the fact that messi did what messi does best, namely misses penalties and move on. There is your scapegoat, not the referee.

  2. I wonder what is wrong with some people is that what pocettino is calling a foul when he should know that strikers are meant to challenge goalkeepers for the ball madrid against man city is the quarter finals 2021 gabriel jesus push ramos with his hand before scoring the second goal at the santiago brenabeu go and learn champion league is not all about assembling stars but through team work and determination

  3. Condemnation: An after thought! It is experience, team work, commitments and discipline in addition to luck that secured champions league victory to Real Madrid, not necessarily the rich quality of its squad. PSG in consumed desperation.

  4. I pity dat boy(mc) dat is pointing at messi penalty miss as a reason why madrid kicked psg out,sir anybody can miss and score pk,penalty is all about luck nt perfection,u can send d ball very close to the post, aiming the edge but sails it wide,u can decide 2 roof it and it ends up hitting d post, blaming messi cos of penalty miss already shows u are a messi hater, your ronaldo dont miss pk?who missed pk against croatia in euro?who missed pk in ucl semi final against bayern?who missed pk against chelsea in ucl final?instead of u 2 simply blame it on psg defence where kempepe was in a wrong position leading to a goal, marquinhos winning a ball n poking it in face of his own goal post for benzema instead of shooting it away,or give ur verdict if it was a foul against donna,u are trying 2 call messi names for missing pk in the first leg!last season was not messi usuall season but 11 goals n 15 assist in 31 games is a good stats

    1. I pity English language when you abuse it in that way. Learn punctiation and use pragraphs from time to time. That mass of text gave me a headache to try to decipher.

The player we are talking about is (allegedly) worlds best. When push comes to shove true top players put themselves above others and score when it matters. And I clearly touched a nerve (which amuses me endlessly) because your rant is hilarious.
You talk about CR misses but forget that he scored in 3 CL finals and decided them with a penalty. You know CL – something your boy hasnt had a whiff on SINCE 2015 LMAOO.

I claim that Ronaldo has a better percentage than messi in penalties total. Disprove me.

No matter how you try to rationalise that penalty miss at the end of the day, 0-3 would be a psycologically insurmountable hurdle for Real and it would give wind in PSGs sails. His miss turned the tie around.

By the way, messi was invisible in that tie, of course with the exception for all the wrong reason – namely being remembered for missing a penalty. Just like in 7 latest seasons where he has been a non factor in CL. In fact, in 9 years we have won as many CLs as you have in 120 AHAHA.

He wont be winning a CL anymore, Roma, Bayern, Liverpool and now RM have destroyed his confidence entirely.
