Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet not close to joining Marseille despite rumours

Clement Lenglet looks set to leave Barcelona this summer transfer window but, despite rumours, he’s not close to joining Marseille as things stand according to Fabrizio Romano. Negotiations haven’t been opened between the two parties and there’s nothing ongoing.

Barcelona are keen to trim the fat on a bloated squad this summer and move on underperforming high-earners. They’ve targeted a top-level centre-back this close-season and have already closed a deal for Andreas Christensen, so are well stocked at in that position given Gerard Pique, Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo are all already in place.

Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti, however, will be moved on. Lenglet joined Barcelona from Sevilla in the summer of 2018 and initially performed well at Camp Nou. But the 27-year-old’s level of performance has dropped off considerably and a fresh start is best for all parties. Lenglet still hopes to make it to the World Cup in Qatar.
