Barcelona not alone in Lewandowski pursuit

Player power is at an all-time high in the football, with many stars running down their contracts and rarely is a player forced to stay at a club they don’t want to be at.

Whether the same occurs with Robert Lewandowski is likely to be one of the stories of the summer. The Polish superstar has made his desire to leave Bayern Munich public and manager Julian Nagelsmann has admitted that he wouldn’t force anyone to stay that didn’t want to.

Yet Bayern President Herbert Hainer has been steadfast in his approach, telling the media that Lewandowski would not be leaving before the end of his contract.

The presumed destination for Lewandowski, should they be able to agree a deal with Bayern, has been Barcelona. The Catalans have been heavily-linked with the striker and having been unable to compete financially for Erling Haaland, have set their sights on the 34-year-old as a more cost-effective option.

However they aren’t alone in that pursuit. Sport have reported that several clubs are interested in the Pole and there’s a good chance they would be able to exercise more financial muscle than Barcelona.

One of the teams interested is Paris Saint-Germain. Should Kylian Mbappe depart for Real Madrid, Lewandowski would come into the frame as an option for PSG.

Arsenal are also looking for a striker this summer and Lewandowski would no doubt represent a leap in quality for the Gunners, while Chelsea haven’t been too enamoured with the return of Romelu Lukaku.

As has been the case with Barcelona’s recent signings, Joan Laporta will likely have to rely on the player’s desire to come to the club rather than an ability to pay over the odds for them. It’s likely the same is the case with Lewandowski.
