Ramadan could influence Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Chelsea

Chelsea host Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge tonight.

It’s a huge game between two elite sides; the reigning European champions against the most successful club in European history.

A place in the semi-final of the Champions League is at stake to every marginal gain is being analysed. One such factor according to Diario AS is the fact that Ramadan began on April first.

Ramadan will last until May first – in that period all who practice it cannot eat or drink during the day. Madrid have two Muslim players in Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy.

But Chelsea have four; Antonio Rudiger, Malang Sarr, N’Golo Kante and Hakim Ziyech. Three of that quartet are important first-teamers for Thomas Tuchel and could start tonight.

Benzema, however, has said that he doesn’t notice a decrease in performance when he’s fasted and has said it’s important to him.

He was in a fasted state last season when Madrid beat Liverpool.
