Lionel Messi delivers hat-trick of assists as Paris Saint-Germain beat Saint-Etienne 3-1

Lionel Messi provided a hat-trick of assists on Sunday afternoon as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind in Ligue 1 to beat Saint-Etienne 3-1. VAR ruled out a fifth minute goal from Neymar (also assisted by Messi) before Denis Bouanga fired the hosts into a shock 23rd minute lead.

Timothee Kolodziejczak saw red shortly before half-time, with Marquinhos drawing PSG level minutes later, assisted by Messi. The former Barcelona man then assisted Angel di Maria in the 79th minute and Marquinhos again in injury time to confirm the win. Messi is the first man to record three assists in one game in France so far this season.

The result means that PSG have hit the 40-point barrier in Ligue 1 after just 15 games. They’ve won 13, drawn one and lost one. Rennes, their closest challenger, are 12 points behind in second. Saint-Etienne will end the day bottom of the league, although they’re level on points with 19th-placed Metz.
