Philippe Coutinho issues verdict on Barcelona’s appointment of Xavi Hernandez

Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho has backed Xavi Hernandez to do a ‘great job’ at Camp Nou.

Xavi was officially presented as the new Barca head coach at Camp Nou on Monday, more than 25,000 supporters turning up to welcome their club legend back to Catalonia.

The former midfielder returns after six years with Al-Sadd in Qatar, four years as a player and two as a head coach.

A very difficult job awaits Xavi at Barca, the club currently in ninth place in La Liga and unable to spend their way out of trouble amid a financial crisis.

But Barca forwards Coutinho is backing him to succeed after watching his presentation from afar, currently on international duty with Brazil.

Coutinho said at a Brazil press conference: “I know that he is a great guy. I am sure he will do a great job at Barcelona.

“I hope that he can have a lot of success with the group that we have. He did a great job in Qatar.”

Xavi won a number of titles in Qatar, but he faces a much more tricky task in Barca with a top four finish the absolute minimum expected for this term, despite the team’s difficult start under now former boss Ronald Koeman.
