Former Barcelona presidential candidate backs Xavi for instant impact

Former Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font believes there will be an instant impact under Xavi Hernandez.

Xavi was officially unveiled to Barca fans on Monday afternoon with more than 25,000 supporters turning up at Camp Nou to welcome their club legend back to Catalonia.

The former midfielder replaces Ronald Koeman as head coach and has a tough job on his hands with Barca currently ninth in the table.

Almost everyone at Barca is delighted to see Xavi brought in as the new boss, but there is an elephant in the room.

That’s because Xavi was actually one of the figureheads of Font‘s presidential campaign.

Font promised to hire Xavi as boss if he won the president role, but he came up short with Joan Laporta winning instead.

The irony is that Laporta has now appointed Xavi, though Font is glad to see that the current president has come to his senses.

“Finally the club has seen this as the best solution,” he told Sport. “Yesterday was an exciting day. Xavi will take things forward because he knows how to work and has clear ideas.

“It’s an active club. I celebrate more now because the one who governs the club agrees with what we thought.

“In the first game, we will see changes. I have had conversations about football with him and it’s a delight to listen to him.”
