Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez has been ruled out for the remainder of the calendar year due to a muscular injury.
The Uruguayan defender limped off the pitch midway through the second half after pulling up with discomfort in his leg and was replaced by Felipe Monteiro.
The details are outlined by a report in Marca, who say that Gimenez is out of the remainder of 2020 in what represent a significant blow for Diego Simeone’s side.
Gimenez is one of the club’s four captains this season and his role has gained even greater significance following a number of exits last summer, including defensive partner Diego Godin.
The 25-year-old has been part of Diego Simeone’s first-team squad for six seasons and is a tough, aggressive, quick and commanding central defender.
However, Gimenez has suffered 18 different injuries in his career, 16 of which have been muscular and has started 20 or more La Liga games in just one season and not at all in the past four campaigns.
