Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have rejected a proposal from La Liga to switch the venue of El Clasico later this month.
Marca outline how both clubs have disapproved of plans from the league to switch the venue of the clash from the Blaugrana’s Camp Nou to Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
It follows on from El Chiringuito’s ‘exclusive’ that Los Blancos would reject any such plan while El Mundo Deportivo journalists have reported that the Catalan club will also reject a move.
The request comes amid a high level of social unrest in the Catalonia province following the imprisonment of a number of political leaders earlier this week.
Should the request be accepted, it would mean that the reverse El Clasico on 1 March would be played in Barcelona, rather than the Spanish capital.
The upcoming El Clasico encounter at the Camp Nou will be the first match to be played in the stadium since the decision taken by Spain’s Supreme Court, the report adds.
There is fears that a high-level demonstration could take place and it would be in the best interests of everyone to switch the games for this league campaign.
The unrest is also impacting on Barcelona’s travel plans to Eibar this weekend, with claims that they will have to do the 550km trip to the Basque County by bus rather than plane because of the chaos.
