Premier Sports confirm La Liga UK deal

Premier Sports have confirmed they have secured the rights to show La Liga in UK and Ireland across the next three seasons.

The broadcaster currently has rights to Serie A matches in the UK and Ireland while it bought packages from broadcaster Eleven Sports for Spanish football last campaign.

Previously, the Spanish top flight – which kicked-off on 16 August – had not been scheduled to be shown in the UK or Ireland at all apart from one free-to-air match on ITV 4 per matchday, along with a highlights programme.

That followed on from a bidding process in which no offers to show the Spanish top flight in the British isles was accepted by the league’s authorities.

That free match will now be switched to Free Sports – a sister channel of Premier Sports – while La Liga TV will be added to Sky TV, with the games being broadcast across Premier Sports 1 and 2.

Sky Sports had been the long-term home of Spanish football in the UK but lost the rights last summer, when Eleven Sports signed a three-year contract.

However, the subscription-based online service failed to gain enough members by December, meaning that the rights were auctioned once more this season.

Through this three-year agreement, LaLiga to become first football league in the world to have dedicated channel showing all live matches in the UK and Ireland.

Premier Sports already broadcasts Serie A, Eredivisie and Scottish Cup football.
