Diego Costa has explained that Antoine Griezmann always ‘dreamed’ of playing alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Griezmann left Atletico Madrid for Barcelona when his €120m release clause was triggered this summer and his former strike partner Costa has now opened up on his exit.
The Spain international also said that last year’s video, in which Griezmann committed his future to Atleti, may have had a negative impact on his exit from Los Rojiblancos this year.
“His dream was to play with Messi and Suarez,” Costa explained, in quotes cited by Marca.
“We all know the player who he is. As a footballer you always want to experiment and it is normal that you want to play there and try if you can be as important a player as he was in Atleti, we can't say anything bad about this.
“He is a happy person, and he did not leave because of last year’s video, but perhaps it did harm the way he left. If all that video had not happened, it would have been a quiet exit.”
Griezmann is yet to play alongside Suarez and Messi – who have both been injured in the opening weeks of the season – as Barca have collected just four points from their opening three league games.
