RFEF confirm weekend only football for La Liga in 2019-20

The Spanish FA has confirmed all La Liga games will be played at weekends only in the 2019-20 season.

Supporters from across Spain complained about fixture changes at short notice, and La Liga scheduling too many games on Friday and Monday evenings, and the Spanish FA (the RFEF) has now reacted.

They initially confirmed that the La Liga season opener between defending champions FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao at San Mames would be moved from Friday August 16 to the following evening.

They have also confirmed that the first three rounds of games will all be played on either Saturday or Sunday, ahead of the September international break.

La Liga have criticised the decision, arguing that it could affect their estimated €2 billion broadcast contracts, and they intend to pursue a legal case against the RFEF in August.

"The actions of the RFEF around fixtures are generating confusion in the international broadcast schedules for La Liga games, stated La Liga president Javier Tebas.

"This potentially affects the league's revenue streams in a significant way, and we intend to fight the ruling in the coming weeks."
