Thomas Vermaelen to join Vissel Kobe after Barcelona exit

Thomas Vermaelen is set to join Japanese club Vissel Kobe following his exit from Barcelona this summer, according to reports.

El Mundo Deportivo detail how the Belgian is already in the Far East and pen a two-and-a-half year contract at the club – who already have three former Blaugrana players on their books.

Previous captain Andres Iniesta alongside Sergi Samper and David Villa currently play for Vissel, along with former Germany international Lukas Podolski.

Vermaelen, previously of Arsenal, suffered a series of injuries having joined in the summer of 2014 – making just 53 first-team appearances at the club.

The defender, who started his career at Dutch club Ajax, also spent the 2016-17 campaign on loan at Roma but continually suffered fitness setbacks.

Vermaelen turns 34 in November and has been free to talk to any other club side since January but has yet to find a club.

This proposed move to Vissel Kobe is likely to be the final contract of the defender’s career following 15 years at the top-level in Europe.
