A court in Spain has ordered Barcelona defender Gerard Pique to pay €2.1m in tax returns and fines relating to image rights.
The player, who has the right to appeal the decision, has yet to comment on the verdict handed down by the Tribunal Económico-Administrativo Central in Madrid, which upheld the decision of the National Court.
The experienced central defender is the latest Spain-based star to be ordered to be questioned in relation to tax invasion, with the charges relating to a time period between 2008 and 2010.
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo (both of whom have suspended jail sentences) and Jose Mourinho are among the series of star names to have been fined due to their tax returns whilst working in Spain.
Pique’s Colombian wife Shakira – an international pop star – is in the midst of a trial in Barcelona relating to a supposed unpaid €14.5m in taxes.
The footballer’s fine breaks down into €1.5m of unpaid tax in relation to his image rights with a further fine of €600k for the non-payment.
