Christian Eriksen: Real Madrid would be a step forward for me

Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen admits ‘Real Madrid would be a step forward’ as he questions his future in North London.

Madrid and Barcelona have both been heavily linked with a move for the Denmark playmaker, whose contract at Spurs expires in the summer of 2020.

It is said that Spurs supremo Daniel Levy may allow the club to cash-in on the midfielder this summer, to lessen the financial burden.

A report in Diario AS last month claimed that there was a ‘verbal agreement’ between the former Ajax playmaker and Madrid.

“I feel like I'm at a stage in my career where I would like to try something new,” Eriksen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, as cited by Marca.

“It would not be a bad thing to stay as I have a lot of respect for what Tottenham is doing, but I would like to try something new.

“I hope this summer something is decided upon, that is the plan. In football you never know when something like that could be decided as it can be fast, but things in football tend to take time.

“Real Madrid? It would be a step forward, but for that Madrid should pick up the phone and call Tottenham to say they love me, as far as I know that has not happened yet.

“Everything depends on Daniel Levy, but there has to be another club, otherwise I'll sit down and negotiate a new contract.

“You cannot set the date by yourself If I have to leave, I'll have to take a step forward and move to a  team better than Tottenham.”
