Villarreal consider approach for Quique Setien

Villarreal are considering replacing Coach Javi Calleja with former Real Betis boss Quique Setien, according to Diario Sport.

The report follows on from a report in Marca which claimed this is a ‘key week’ for the future of Calleja, who guided the Yellow Submarine to safety and the Europa League quarter-finals this season.

Calleja was dismissed by the club on 10 December but returned to the club exactly 50 days later following an underwhelming stint by his successor Luis Garcia.

Upon his return to the Estadio de la Ceramica, Calleja won 10 of his 23 matches at the helm and he supposedly has the backing of president Fernando Roig but no other key figures on the club’s board.

Setien was appointed at Betis at the start of the 2017-18 campaign, leading them to a 6th-place finish – their highest since 2005, and a return to European football for the first time in five seasons.

However, the Andalusian club suffered a sharp downturn in form in the final six months of his stint and only secured a top-half finish on the final day of the campaign.

Setien led Betis to victories at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan this season, alongside defeating Atletico Madrid.
