Betis move for Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno

Real Betis have targeted Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno to alleviate their goalscoring problems, according to a report in Marca.

Moreno became the Yellow Submarine’s club record signing when he joined from Espanyol in a €25m deal last summer but has endured an underwhelming season.

The 27-year-old has had to compete with Carlos Bacca and Karl Toko-Ekambi – two other 2018 summer arrivals – for a starting position at the Estadio Ceramica.

Moreno has managed just seven La Liga goals this season across 24 starts although he has added a further five strikes across cup competitions this year.

The report cites the significance of Betis sporting director Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, who worked with the striker during a stint at Real Mallorca in the 2013/14 campaign.

Moreno has only started five La Liga games since the halfway point of the campaign and has fallen out of favour, meaning that a summer exit could be likely.

The striker has a €40m release clause at the club but it is likely they could aim to recoup the transfer fee that was spent last summer.
