Real Betis retain Quique Setien until summer

Real Betis have confirmed they will not sack Coach Quique Setien this season despite a prolonged run of poor form.

The club confirmed a report in El Mundo Deportivo say that Betis chiefs, including Director of Football Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, met on Thursday to discuss the immediate situation of the Coach.

Wednesday night’s 4-0 defeat at Levante – who had not previously won in nine games – marked a new low in a tough season for the club, who are now out of contention for a European place.

The report outlined how Setien’s contract at the Seville-based club expires in the summer of 2020 and should Los Verdiblancos dismiss him now rather than at the end of the season, the compensation package would be significantly more.

Alaves boss Abelardo Fernandez has been linked with replacing Setien at the club this summer.

“Due to the current situation of Real Betis Balompié first team, the sporting commission and the administration board at the club have held, in the last few days, several meetings and interviews with all the parties to analyse this situation and make all the amends necessary to change it,” read a club statement.

“Real Betis administration board, gathered this morning, have decided to not change the technical management of the first team and keep Quique Setién and his technical staff in charge of the team.

“The club, as it has been stated in the last months, will undertake the appropriate assessment once LaLiga season is finished.

“During these meetings, all the parties have expressed that performances like last Wednesday (against Levante) cannot be repeated.

“Players and coaches have shown their commitment towards Real Betis and the fans and explain that they feel able of reverting this situation and competing to their best level in the games left to be played.

“The administration board at Real Betis Balompié asks for unity and the support of all the Béticos to fight together until the end of the season and achieve the best possible results.”
