Real Madrid could have appointed Jose Mourinho – Aitor Karanka

Jose Mourinho would have been an ‘equally good choice’ for Real Madrid boss as Zinedine Zidane, claims his former number two Aitor Karanka.

Karanka was the number two to Mourinho across his three seasons in Madrid between 2010 and 2013, with the two remaining closely linked off the pitch.

Zidane was reappointed Los Blancos boss last month after nine months away, following the sackings of both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari this campaign.

“Mourinho would have been an equally good choice for Madrid as Zidane,” Karanka told an interview with Marca.

“Either option is an incredibly strong one, you are analysing two Coaches with different ideas and profiles, there is no right or wrong answer.

“You can see Manchester United are now out of the Champions League, but during Mourinho’s first season there the club won three trophies.

“Football moves on very swiftly and the good things are forgotten about – it is easier to discuss the negative things.

“Mourinho will return to the top level soon.”
