Lionel Messi leads the way in European scoring charts

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is the leading goal scorer in European club football, after netting his 26th La Liga goal of the season at the weekend.

The Argentina international scored from the penalty spot in the 3-1 win at home to Rayo Vallecano, as the Catalan side re-established their seven point lead at the top of the table.

His record of 26 goals in 25 league games is two better than his closest European rival, PSG's Kylian Mbappe, who has 24 goals in 21 league games for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Messi's old La Liga rival Cristiano Ronaldo has netted 19 league goals for Juventus in his debut Serie A campaign, and Messi's closest challenger in Spanish football is team mate Luis Suarez, who has 17 goals in La Liga.

His best ever goal return in domestic action was in the 2011-12 season, where he netted 50 goals in 37 La Liga games.
