Real Madrid Champions League exit cost €45m

Real Madrid’s elimination from the Champions League Round of 16 will see the club lose out on €45m in revenue, report Diario AS.

The piece cites a UEFA report calculating the prize money handed out to teams in its premier club competition, which does not factor in revenue generated by the clubs on matchdays or sponsorships.

Each round of the competition sees an increase in a club’s prize money incrementally, as does qualification for next summer’s European Super Cup.

Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League – which they have won four of the last five editions – on Tuesday with a humiliating 4-1 home defeat against Ajax.
