POST MATCH: Late Bale penalty seals key win for Real Madrid

Gareth Bale came off the bench to seal a vital 2-1 win for Real Madrid away at Levante and close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona, to nine points.

Santiago Solari's side struggled in an opening half of few chances for either side, with Karim Benzema and Lucas Vazquez both coming close to breaking the deadlock.

Former French international Benzema found the breakthrough two minutes before the break, with VAR ruling in favour of a penalty for handball against Levante defender Enis Bardhi.

Paco Lopez's side looked to rally after the break, and they finally found an equaliser on the hour mark as Roger turned home Jose Morales' low left wing cross.

With the visitors running out of time, Solari summoned Welsh international Bale to find a late winner for Los Blancos.

With Levante looking to see out the draw, Real Madrid were controversially awarded a penalty on 78 minutes, after substitute Cheick Doukoure was adjudged to have fouled Casemiro.

Despite replays confirming a lack of contact by Doukoure on the Brazilian midfielder, Bale slotted home from the spot to seal all three points for the visitors.
