Gerard Pique in line for La Liga season record

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is on course to set a La Liga record for the 2018-19 season against Athletic Bilbao this evening.

Pique has been a mainstay for Ernesto Valverde's side this season as they look to defend their La Liga title, and the centre back has played in all of their league games to date.

If the former Spanish international completes the full 90 minutes against San Mames, he will have racked up 2.070 minutes of league action this season – a record for an outfield player in the Spanish top flight in 2018-19.

The only rival to Pique for consistency amongst outfield players this season has been Real Valladolid's Fernando Calero, but he missed their 0-0 draw against Villarreal on Friday night.

Only goal keeper Marc Ter Stegen has played more than him for Barcelona in La Liga so far this season, and with injury concerns remaining over Samuel Umtiti, Pique will remain at the heart of Barcelona's defence until at least the end of the season.
