Diego Simeone: We lost the game, not VAR

Diego Simeone refused to blame VAR as his side lost 3-1 to rivals Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The referee consulted the video assistant on three occasions, with the visitors feeling the greater benefit, with a first half penalty decision in favour of Vinicius Junior.

Whilst VAR did confirm Antoine Griezmann's first half goal, it ruled out Alvaro Morata strike after the break, penalising the former Chelsea man for a marginal offside.

However the Argentine refused to look for excuses, as his side slipped down to third in the La Liga table.

"I do not usually talk about VAR.

"It will improve for the benefit of everyone in time.

"I have not seen the replays of the incidents in question – but VAR was not the reason we lost today."

Instead he preferred to praise their opponents and call on his own side to do more.

"It was a tough game and they were better than us. They were forceful in the key moments.

"We are not thinking about the Champions League games yet. We have had two painful defeats, we play Rayo next week and we must improve and pick ourselves up quickly."
