Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong for an initial €75m with a further €11m in add-ons, it has been confirmed.
The Dutch international will remain at the Amsterdam club until the end of the current campaign before then joining Barca permanently.
“De Jong is one of Europe's most promising midfield talents,” read a club statement from Barcelona.
“At just 21 years of age, he is joining the club after proving himself as a multifunctional player with an excellent reading of the game and the ability to provide the killer pass.”
Last week, El Mundo Deportivo claimed a high-ranking delegation of Barca representatives including club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and sporting director Eric Abidal met with the player on Thursday.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain had also been strongly linked for the in-demand midfielder, who has won five caps for the Netherlands.
De Jong has only made 68 first-team appearances for Ajax but his level of performance has ensured he has caught the attention of Europe’s leading clubs.
