Barcelona rule out move for free agent Pepe

Barcelona will not move to sign former Real Madrid defender Pepe following his exit from Besiktas, according to Diario Sport.

The 35-year-old made 52 appearances for the Turkish giants since joining on a free transfer from Madrid in the summer of 2017 but is reported to have left his contract six months early.

The experienced central defender was a potential match for the Blaugrana, who are said to be on lookout for a short-term defensive signing this summer due to injuries.

Thomas Vermaelen and Samuel Umtiti are both unavailable due to persistent injury problems, leaving Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique as the only fit central defenders at the club.

Pepe impressed for his nation at this summer’s World Cup and has been linked with a possible return to former club FC Porto.
