Antoine Griezmann: ‘A shame a Frenchman did not win the Ballon d’Or’

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has joked ‘maybe the European Cup is more important than the World Cup’ after Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or.

Griezmann helped his nation to this year’s World Cup trophy in Russia but missed out on the award to the Croatian midfielder, whom he helped defeat in the final in Moscow.

“It's a pity that a Frenchman did not win,” Griezmann told reporters at the event, held in Paris.

“Maybe the European Cup is more important than the World Cup. But we'll see.

“What do I need to do to win? Good question…but I congratulate Modric as the Ballon d'Or. He had a great year.

“I am very happy with my own year, I have achieved all my objectives this year. I'd like to have the Ballon d'Or, of course. Next year perhaps.”
