Javier Tebas proposes Lionel Messi award for ‘the best player’

La Liga president Javier Tebas believes a trophy should be created in honour of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi for the league’s best player.

The Argentine star has won the Ballon d’Or award one five occasions and is La Liga’s all-time leading goal scorer on 390 – lifting the title nine times.

Madrid-based sports newspaper Marca have named accolades after Telmo Zarra, Rafael 'Pichichi' Moreno and Ricardo Zamora.

“I believe Messi will go down as the greatest player in football history, he is already,” Tebas told reporters.

“Some people will talk about Neymar but the fact is he is already 26 years old, and as far as I can remember, Messi started to play for Barcelona as a youngster and he still surprises us every year.

“He makes it look like he has no limits and he plays at the maximum level, he is simply the best there is.

“I think it’s a great idea to create a trophy for the best player every season named Leo Messi as there is a (Telmo) Zarra trophy for the top scorer and others, it is a great idea.”
