Real Madrid ‘contact’ Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho

Real Madrid have contacted Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as they attempt to bring him back to the club, say El Pais.

Reputable Madrid-based journalist Diego Torres – who previously wrote a biography on the Portuguese boss – has written the remarkable report amid speculation on Julen Lopetegui’s future.

The report claims Mourinho is ‘waiting to be fired’ at Old Trafford in the midst of a terrible run of form, although a comeback win over Newcastle and draw at Chelsea have calmed the situation.

The United boss is said to have already spoken to Madrid director Jose Angel Sanchez and it is the second time in three years Los Blancos have considered him, as they thought of replacing Rafael Benitez with Mourinho in 2016 (Zinedine Zidane eventually was appointed).

“I want to be here and finish my contract,” Mourinho, whose deal at Old Trafford runs through until 2021, told reporters on Monday.

“I even want to extend it. I want to be here until the last day. I only think about Manchester United.”

Madrid directors are said to be concerned over Mourinho’s ‘fractious relationship’ with Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Dani Carvajal but this is not enough to prevent the approach.

The club are prepared to wait long-term for the boss and would appoint Santiago Solari on a short-term basis, the report concludes.
