Diego Simeone renewal ‘would be best’ for him and Atletico Madrid – CEO

Diego Simeone renewing his contract at Atletico Madrid ‘would be best for all parties’, believes the club’s CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin.

The Argentine’s contract at Los Rojiblancos expires in 2020 with small doubts that next season could be his last in the Spanish capital, where he has been at the helm since 2011.

“It would be best for all parties if he were to renew the deal,” Marin told Cuban outlet Juventud Rebelde, as cited by Diario AS.

“It is tough to meet a match which leads to long-term results but this is what we have tried to do, even if this is extremely difficult in a sporting sense.

“Simeone has the remainder of this season and the entirety of the next one and we want this to be extended further, it is simple.

“I was the individual who brought him to the club, as I do with virtually all of our employees and it was one of my best decisions.”

Marin also spoke more generally of the club’s prolific rise in recent years: “There is a lot of hard work behind all the success, it has been annual growth each season.

“We have won 11 trophies in nine years and now we have 125,000 socios, almost 30m followers on social media and now we have a new stadium which is reaching the Champions League final.”
