Manchester City deny Lionel Messi claims, but…

Manchester City have denied offering to triple Lionel Messi’s wages but stopped short of refuting their interest in the Barcelona No 10.

Mundo Deportivo reported on Saturday that City had proposed Messi a contract worth in excess of €1m a week, with quotes attributed to their chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak forming the basis of its story.

Furthermore, a video subsequently leaked saw Al Mubarak answer ‘Messi’ when he was asked about the player he most regretted being unable to sign in his 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the English champions told Goal.com that they ‘absolutely refute’ the report, adding ‘Al Mubarak provided no extra information’.

On the other hand, AS notes City did not explicitly deny their interest in Messi, while Goal claims they had held ‘a long-term interest’ in signing the Argentine before he signed a new contract with Barca last year.
