Diego Simeone frustration at refusal to use VAR

Diego Simeone has lambasted the officials refusing to consult VAR technology after an alleged Casemiro handball in the penalty area.

The ball appeared to hit the hand of the Brazilian inside the penalty area in the first half of Atletico Madrid’s 0-0 draw at Real Madrid on Saturday night, but no decision was forthcoming.

“Officials can make mistakes and they did not stop to review the penalty incident,” Simeone told reporters after the match, as cited by Marca.

“There is not much more I can say but it was the same last season with Samuel Umtiti, who stopped the ball going towards the goal.

“These games are always really tough for us, they are massive tests so to get a positive result you need these results to go your way.

“We should have taken the lead in the first half, our performance was fantastic and it was only because of Thibaut Courtois that we were not ahead.

“In the second half they responded well, they changed their shape and we had to suffer more, so a draw is fair.

“We will not compare ourselves to Madrid nor to Barcelona, we are only focused on being the best Atletico in the history of the club.”
