Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde remains bemused by VAR scope

Barcelona Coach Ernesto Valverde admits he is still ‘unsure’ about aspects of VAR and remains unconvinced on Clement Lenglet’s red card.

The French defender was dismissed, following the use of the technology, against Girona on Sunday – a decision which Valverde criticised and the club unsuccessfully attempted to overturn.

“It is imperative for football as a sport to give all the help they can to officials,” Valverde told reporters on Tuesday, as cited by El Mundo Deportivo.

“I am still not clear on the scope of VAR and what role it has in determining the importance of the incidents on the pitch.

“My impression was that it would be used for obvious incidents, issues that could have little or no argument either way.

“So yeah, do I like it? In some aspects yes, but there are still things I am unsure about and that I believe should have been explained better.

“Was it crucial in Clement Lenglet’s dismissal? As I said, I do not know if this was a relevant situation for the technology to examine, as it was not a crucial moment at the time.”
