La Liga matches streamed on Facebook

One European football match from either Spain or Italy will be shown free via Facebook for UK viewers this season, it has been confirmed.

Eleven Sports have confirmed that the social media platform will show one match per week, starting with the opening day La Liga meeting between Girona and Real Valladolid on Friday night, followed by the Serie A clash between Chievo Verona and Juventus on 18 August.

Last week, the company confirmed that a ‘season pass’ was available at £49.99 is bought before 31 August, with a monthly payment available at £5.99.

It appears increasingly likely that matches will be available only online, rather than on TV, while only a selection of matches will be available to viewers based in the UK.

“By making Facebook our free-to-air partner, we are giving our leading content centre stage projection, opening it up to new and diverse audiences, and confirming again our innovative leadership in the global sports media industry,” said Danny Menken, Group Managing Director, Eleven Sports.

“In all our global markets we want to be where the fans are. We aim to serve fan communities and develop interaction and engagement around our content, while ensuring we are always accessible and easy to reach. Our unique free-to-air partnership with Facebook helps us to do this as part of our fresh and contemporary approach to distribution.”
