Lopetegui’s Madrid lose to United

Real Madrid fell to defeat in their first match under new Coach Julen Lopetegui as they were edged out 2-1 by Manchester United in Miami.

Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s side before setting up Ander Herrera, who finished with a first-time shot, to double their lead just before the half-hour mark.

Karim Benzema – the only player to start the game who began the Champions League final victory over Liverpool – pulled one back for Madrid in first-half stoppage time.

Gareth Bale started for Madrid but his only effort of note was a curling shot from the edge of the area that flashed wide of goal, while new signing Vinicius Junior looked lively.

New Madrid shot-stopper Andriy Lunin made a second half appearance, keeping a clean sheet, while new €40m full-back Alvaro Odriozola began the game.
