Simeone: Atleti must be creative

Diego Simeone has reiterated Atletico Madrid’s need to be ‘creative’ in the transfer market as they are not a ‘super powerful club’.

The Argentine underlined how the club could not ‘spend €150m or €200m on one player’ in a thinly-veiled swipe at La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“We do not have the same options as the super powerful clubs,” Simeone told The Coaches Voice, as cited by Cadena Cope.

“We cannot spend €150m or €200m on one player so we must try to be creative, to make the team better and develop who we have.

“We need to do lots of work to ensure our new signings are the right ones and that we avoid making any mistakes.

“The most important thing for me is energy and to keep calm, to communicate what I feel. The hardest thing to sustain is your energy.

“Atletico fans have always wanted to have a competitive team, strong in defence, a team that could play the counterattack and be a nuisance for the super powerful rivals, and my aim is focused on that.”
