William Carvalho credits ‘ambitious’ Betis

William Carvalho has hailed the ‘ambitious project’ and ‘wonderful fans’ at Real Betis as the main pillars behind his move.

The Portugal international has joined Los Verdiblancos from Sporting CP in a reported €25m deal and was presented in front of 6,000 fans on Tuesday.

“The project the club has shown me is very ambitious, it is why I am here,” Carvalho told reporters, as cited by Estadio Deportivo.

“I hope the season ahead is as good as the previous one when we qualified for the Europa League, or perhaps even better.

“I am a player who wants to contribute in a big way this year to make everything work and that we can make it as good or even better than last year.

“Here we have wonderful fans who show their love for their players and that helped me decide, alongside the approach and persuasion of the directors of course.

“I talked to Joel Campbell and Cristian Piccini. I asked them about the club and they told me it’s huge, with wonderful fans. It’s a marvellous club with a great structure, good playing style, ball possession, and that also played its part.

“I have already felt a lot of love. I didn’t expect this welcome. And today, when I arrived to the stadium I was surprised to see so many fans.

“I have played for many years in the Portuguese league and now I have the opportunity to repeat that in the Spanish league, which is more competitive with the best players in the world.

“My experience in the Portuguese league is going to be useful here. I know it’s a hard tournament, but I’m ready.”
