Spain claim World Cup award

Spain’s World Cup campaign may have ended in failure – but they nonetheless managed to take home the Fair Play Trophy.

Despite Spain going out to hosts Russia on penalties at the last-16 stage, their haul of 32 fouls – compared to the 59 they faced – was unsurpassed by any of the other 31 teams at the tournament.

Indeed, the only blot on La Roja’s copybook was a yellow card shown to Sergio Busquets during their opening 3-3 draw with Portugal.

It is the third time that Spain have received this distinction after the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
