Defender Jose Maria Gimenez has penned a new five-year contract at Atletico Madrid which will double his release clause, it has been confirmed.
The Uruguayan defender’s new deal at Los Rojiblancos will run through until the summer of 2023 and contains a €120m release clause – rising from the previous reported figure of €60m.
The 23-year-old made just 17 La Liga starts last season as Diego Godin and Stefan Savic were often preferred by Coach Diego Simeone.
This led to reports in Marca that Real Madrid would activate his old clause, but these now appear to have been wide of the mark.
Gimenez, who will be part of Uruguay’s World Cup squad this summer, can play in the heart of the defence or on the right-hand side.
The defender joined Los Rojiblancos from Danubio in 2013.
