Madrid to swoop for Atleti’s Gimenez

Real Madrid will activate the €60m release clause of defender Jose Maria Gimenez from city rivals Atletico Madrid, say reports in Spain.

The European champions are keen to bring in one defensive reinforcement and believes the Uruguayan’s release clause represents the best value for money on the market, say Marca.

The 23-year-old has fallen behind Diego Godin and Stefan Savic in the pecking order at Atleti, making just 17 La Liga starts this campaign.

Gimenez, who will be part of Uruguay’s World Cup squad this summer and can play in the heart of the defence or on the right-hand side.

The defender joined Los Rojiblancos from Danubio in 2013 and could follow in the footsteps of Theo Hernandez, who joined Madrid from their city rivals last summer.
