Simeone laments Atleti’s ‘small squad’

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone believes Sunday’s defeat at home to Espanyol was the result of his resources being stretched.

Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa, Angel Correa, Gabi and Diego Godin all sat out the clash, leaving Los Rojiblancos down to the bare bones after the Europa League semi-final win over Arsenal.

“We have very few players and this can be problematic,” Simeone told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“For this game we had Costa and Correa suspended, Gabi and Godin are both 32 and they both put in a lot of energy to Thursday, as did Griezmann.

“We have a busy schedule and with the size of our squad, you have to accept that these things will happen.

“It was a big boost to have Filipe Luis back, it is important he does not get injured again but he has made massive progress after a serious injury.”
