Diego Simeone has underlined the tactical flexibility of his team after Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Alaves to strengthen their grip on second spot.
A late Kevin Gameiro penalty won the points for Atletico Madrid in a hard-fought battle which the Basque hosts started brightly before a tactical switch from the visitors.
“I like the capability of reinventing the team,” Simeone told reporters, as cited by Marca.
“We need to be able to be flexible with our tactics and with our personnel and we made a change in the 15th minute, to switch to five at the back – and they stopped causing us problems.
“It is a bonus for us to have players who can play in various positions as it gives us more options and today Sime Vrsaljko played better centrally than as a full-back, and I told him this.
“Axel Werner? He is an excellent young professional with a big future and we trusted in him, he has grown a lot since he arrived with us.”
