Arsenal in ‘pole position’ for Enrique

Arsenal are in ‘pole position’ to appoint former Barcelona Coach Luis Enrique this summer, according to reports in the Spanish press.

A report in El Mundo Deportivo states that Thomas Tuchel’s imminent arrival at Bayern Munich ensures Enrique, who also previously coached Roma and Celta Vigo, is now favourite for the role at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger is expected to leave his role at the end of the campaign, according to the report, after more than two decades in the North London hotseat.

New Gunners sporting director Raul Sanllehi is said to be key on any move for the 47-year-old, who had been linked to Chelsea before talks ‘significantly cooled down’.

Diario Sport stated earlier this month that Enrique’s ‘indecision’ and ‘lack of commitment’ had forced the West London club to look elsewhere to find a replacement.

The report continues that Maurizio Sarri is likely to remain at Napoli – another club ‘Lucho’ had been linked to – with Arsenal the most attractive proposal.

Enrique is said to have turned down the offer to replace Eduardo Berizzo in December due to his reluctance to take charge in the middle of a season.
