Lionel Messi has admitted he is now playing in a deeper role compared to previous years but the ‘idea’ remains of ‘trying to score goals’.
The Argentine star grew to fame as a ‘false nine’ under Pep Guardiola but now aged 30, he prefers to orchestrate proceedings from a position further back on the pitch, between the midfield and attack.
“Yes, in the past year I have moved a bit deeper, getting to the goal from behind, unlike other years when I was more in the final third of the pitch,” Messi told an interview with Pepsi, in quotes carried by ESPN.
“So it's true that I have moved a few metres back, but still with the idea of getting in the area and trying to score goals.”
