Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro gave Madrid a 2-1 win on Tuesday against a PSG side that lost Marco Verratti to a red card and had only an Edinson Cavani consolation to show for their efforts.

Los Blancos lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a full-strength back four protecting a midfield that remained without Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, although the pair were substitutes.

The French giants, meanwhile, were without Neymar after the Brazilian broke his foot, so former Madrid man Angel Di Maria moved to the right wing and Kylian Mbappe switched to the left.

PSG's fans did their best to unsettle Los Merengues, from letting off firecrackers outside their hotel room before the game to filling Parc des Princes with red smoke.

However, Madrid were having none of it and looked as sharp as they ever had under Zinedine Zidane, Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema forcing Alphonse Areola into crucial stops before half-time.

The visitors continued to dominate after the restart and were rewarded when Marco Asensio nutmegged ex-Barcelona right-back Dani Alves to release Lucas Vazquez. The winger's cross was headed in by Ronaldo at the far post.

The goal meant the Portuguese had scored in all eight of his Champions League appearances in 2017-18, and that wa s followed by Verratti picking up a second yellow card for dissent.

Only after did PSG show some ambition, bringing on Javier Pastore and Julian Draxler, and they did pull one back through Cavani, who turned in from a melee in Madrid's box.

However, hopes of another 'remontada' involving Unai Emery's side were dashed with 10 minutes to spare as Casemiro's strike deflected past Areola.

PSG supporters piled on the smoke, despite Thiago Silva's protestations, but Madrid did in terms of more goal attempts, although Isco had a shot tipped around the post and Asensio's curler clipped the post.
