Valencia tighten grip on CL slot

Valencia moved eight points clear of fifth-placed Sevilla with a 2-0 win over Real Betis, to strengthen their grip on Champions League qualification.

Rodrigo Moreno finished off a quick counter-attack to fire the hosts ahead after 23 minutes, after Betis had enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the opening stages.

Simone Zaza doubled Marcelino’s side’s lead shortly after the break, as he fired home from Geoffrey Kongodbia’s through-ball.

However, there was controversy late on as Marc Bartra headed one back for the visitors with 15 minutes remaining although this was disallowed for a seemingly non-existent foul on home goalkeeper Norberto Neto.

Los Che held on to make it five games unbeaten while Los Verdiblancos remain 9th.
